Nature Notes: Too Fast, Too Furious

2013_07_29_9999_8a

Five little cucumber seeds. That's all we planted. And now we're getting about this many cucumbers Every. Freakin'. Day. I don't know about you, but I can't eat 'em that fast.

I have added them to salads, made cucumber salad, and cubed them as snacks. I have sent bags of them to the office with Hubby to be foisted upon unwary coworkers.

I have rummaged out my old pickle recipe from my early, more enthusiastic homemaking years. After a quick review of it, I have concluded that I must have been out of my mind back then. Also, I have no idea where the wire basket thingy for the canning pot went. Also, we are not that crazy about pickles.

Somehow, I always forget about this part of having a garden. Everything comes in at once, creating a glut of delicious, fresh, organic produce and a pile of guilt for being unprepared to deal with it. So yeah. Mother Nature has been very, very good to us this year. Damn it.

     But wait, there's more!

Oh, my! I have cucumber plants, but not nearly as many cukes as you have. I love pickling - I ferment them for a week or so, then we enjoy the homemade probiotics.

I like it when the tomatoes are ready at the same time as the cucumbers - they go together nicely in a salad.

That is a big harvest. I've had that situation when I used to have a vegetable garden. Too much all at once.

Oh yes, that is a big harvest. I can not eat cucumbers, they do a number on me. I use to love them when I was younger. Thanks for sharing, have a happy week!

Haha! You're going to be overrun with cucumbers! I don't plant them myself, but have friends that bring me bags of cukes and squash because they have the same situation - they're overrun!

Oh that's a lot, meaning your soil is so healthy and your environment dont harbor diseases. For me that size is already past its prime for salads. I love it when smaller than that, i can even just eat it from the plant to the mouth, eat very fresh after washing. I don't need vinaigrette or salad dressing, i miss that stage.
