Residents there woke up to find their fields and gardens sprouting millions of aggressive and fast-growing space plants, possibly seeded overnight during a meteor shower. The plants are visibly growing and are multiplying out of control.

Nah. It's just wild garlic. It only looks like something out of science fiction.
The bulblet head here is only about three quarters of an inch across, but it's fully packed with baby garlics that will hit the ground running. Well anyway, they would have if I hadn't pulled it up.
I love the energy of the new growth here, coiling like springs and bursting through the papery skin. I regretted having to kill it, but there are plenty more where this one came from.
One of these days, I swear, I am going to make a weed garden.

I LOVE this! What a fabulous image that top one is, and familiar too... I do love wild garlic woods. I'm guessing that wild garlic an invasive species in the US? Don't know if you tried this but those bulblets are pretty good in salad and what better way of getting rid of invasives can there be than eating them :D

Oh..super post Vicki...I am late getting to everything these days. That is such an interesting looking invasive..I haven't seen any yet, but I am keeping an eye out. We fight purple loosetrife here that is taking over wetlands....

What is the plant?
I had never seen such a plant. It might be a weed but it makes for a very interesting photo. Thanks for educating me - I love learning new things every day!
Okay, I have to admit, you had me for a few sentences there. LOL I think I had heard about wild garlic being invasive as well. But I have no issue with that ... I just planted five bunches of peppermint on my little hill! LOL

What a great image!:-) As to your "weed garden", just remember what "they" say: A weed is only a plant that comes up in the wrong place... Otherwise, it's a "specimen" or a "wildflower".:-)
