Nature Notes: Reflections

Reflections

The trees between the pond and the house are still green, and they mostly hide the view of the woods behind. I hadn't been down there in a while, thinking there wasn't much to see now. Imagine my surprise this week when I reached the water -- a still mirror of azure sky and crimson leaves.

The air was just chilly enough to make a sweatshirt feel good, and a breeze ruffled the water now and then. Two hawks circled, apparently curious about my camera. (That, or I was standing on something dead. With hawks it's hard to tell.)

I cut my first pumpkin from the patch and picked the last of the beans. There are still a few watermelons, and the herbs are still going strong, but the garden is essentially over. I need to sit down and make notes soon on what worked, what didn't.

I need to sit down and take stock in general, actually. We have been here a full year now, during which I have done little, really, to make it my own. Now that the house and I have gotten used to each other, it's time. Don't you think?

Oh my gosh..what beautiful reflections. So clear. I feel as you do about the house. It has taken me longer to put my touch on the house as I had lived in our former house for so long. I can still picture where everything was stored there. This is lovely.. Have a good weekend Vicki....Michelle

Wow. Gorgeous.

Good for you for taking an entire year to just be with the place. You've had time to see what it has to offer so you can enhance and work with that now, rather than trying to work against it. But really? You've been there a whole year already?

That's such a crystal clear reflection! For a moment I also thought you shot the thing upside down. Nicely captured and a great find! Love the vibrant colors!

Michelle, exactly. I was in the old house for 20 years. Starting over is hard.

Sally, yes, it is hard to believe it's been that long. I'm glad I've taken my time before making changes, but I kind of feel frustrated too. It seems like so much more should have been done by now.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words. The reflections really were that bright. It was an amazing sight!

gorgeous reflections, it's nice to get used to a place and settle in, feel waht its moods are like before you start to make it your own, so maybe a year on is the right time...

How beautiful your surroundings are! You have been listening to the land by not doing anything drastic in the first year. It is so important to become truly well acquainted with the land itselt, to see what grows where and why , before we make changes. It is always good to take stock of what others have done before us and what has worded well.
Good luck with your stock taking.

Thanks for visiting. Wonderful reflections - so sharp the photos could be up-side-down! If there is a junior Chuck you may get him, too!
